Wall decals peeling off, HELP!

Wall Decals Peeling Off the Wall? Here's How to Fix It

The Wall Decal Apocalypse (and how we stopped it)

When we started making wall decals more than 13 years ago, we learned something the hard way.

Not all walls are friendly.

Some walls welcome decals with open arms.

Others fight back like a toddler refusing vegetables.

Corners lift. Decals slowly slide down the wall. Sometimes a perfectly installed decal attempts a midnight escape.

We call this the Wall Decal Apocalypse.

The good news? After years of testing materials, paints, primers, adhesives, and installation methods, we figured out how to stop it before it starts.

Today we rarely see decals peeling from our customers' walls because we cover all the bases before installation. We often reach out to customers to learn about their wall surface and paint type so we can recommend the right material from the start.

If you're planning a project, these guides will help you avoid problems and get professional results:

Why Wall Decals Sometimes Peel

After installing thousands of decals over the years, we discovered that most adhesion issues come down to just a few factors:

  • Paint additives such as Teflon, silicone, or stain-blocking chemicals that reduce surface adhesion
  • Fresh paint that hasn't cured yet
  • Highly washable or scrub-resistant paint finishes
  • Constant changes in paint formulas

Paint manufacturers regularly change the chemical formulas in their products, but they rarely announce those changes publicly. That means installers like us are constantly testing materials to make sure they continue working with modern paints.

Through dozens of product tests we have identified materials that work for the vast majority of walls, but it remains a bit of an ongoing battle.

Another important detail many people don't realize:

Freshly painted walls continue releasing gases for several weeks.

Even when paint feels dry, the wall is still going through a curing process called out-gassing. During this time the paint slowly releases trapped gases into the air.

Think of it as the wall taking a long, slow breath out that can last up to six weeks.

Installing decals during this period can cause them to lift or slide.

For best results:

  • Wait 4 to 6 weeks after painting before installing decals
  • Make sure the wall was primed and painted, not just painted

Primer helps lock the paint into the wall surface and creates a much more stable base for decals and wallpaper.

Vinyl vs Fabric Wall Decals

Not all decal materials behave the same way.

Our vinyl decals are removable, but they are not repositionable.

Our self-adhesive fabric decals, however, can be repositioned and even moved from wall to wall without damaging the surface.

Over the years we have found that fabric decals tend to perform better on modern paints and textured walls, which is why we often recommend them when possible.

If Your Wall Decal Is Peeling

First rule: don't panic.

If the corners are lifting slightly, the problem can often be fixed quickly with a removable adhesive spray.

Many customers have had success using products such as:

  1. Aleene's Tack-It Over & Over Glue
  2. Aleene's Repositionable Tacky Spray
  3. Elmer's Repositionable Mounting Spray
  4. Gorilla Repositionable Adhesive Spray
  5. Krylon Easy Tack Adhesive Spray

For large fabric decals, especially floral murals or large wall installations applied to highly washable paints, another option that works very well is EZ Hang by Roman.

This product helps activate adhesion and makes it easier to reposition large wall graphics during installation.

Always follow the manufacturer's instructions when using any adhesive product.

If the Decal Fell Off Completely

If your decal has fallen off the wall completely rather than just lifting at the corners, adhesive solutions may not work.

But don't worry.

Contact us and we'll help you figure out the best solution or replacement option.

We're always happy to help our customers make their project work.

Refunds and Replacement Policy

Because every wall surface and paint formula behaves differently, we cannot guarantee adhesion on every surface.

For this reason we do not issue refunds due to adhesion failure. However, we are happy to work with customers to find a replacement solution or offer a discounted replacement when possible.

If you have questions about installation or surface compatibility, feel free to contact us.

After more than 13 years designing wall decor, we’ve created thousands of wall decals used in nurseries, bedrooms, playrooms, offices, and commercial spaces.
