Can You Put Peel and Stick Wallpaper Over Textured Walls?

One of the most common questions customers ask before ordering is whether peel and stick wallpaper can be installed over a textured wall. The short answer is: sometimes, but only when the texture is very light and the selected wallpaper passes an adhesion test on the actual wall.

Peel and stick wallpaper performs best on clean, dry, smooth, properly painted walls. Wall texture can affect both adhesion and finished appearance, so the depth and shape of the texture matter.

No peel-and-stick material can be guaranteed over a textured wall without testing. A material may adhere successfully while still allowing the underlying texture to remain visible. Always evaluate both adhesion and appearance before ordering wallpaper for a complete wall.

When Peel and Stick Wallpaper May Work on a Textured Wall

If the wall has only a very light, evenly distributed texture, some peel-and-stick materials may install successfully. The texture should not contain deep valleys, sharp peaks, pronounced ridges, loose material, or areas that prevent the adhesive from making broad contact with the painted surface.

Thicker or more substantial wallpaper may disguise subtle wall variation better than a thinner material. However, increased thickness does not automatically guarantee adhesion.

Which Peel and Stick Material Is Best for Very Light Texture?

Among our self-adhesive options, CANVAS Peel & Stick is generally the first material to test on a very lightly textured wall. Its embossed canvas finish, high opacity, substantial construction, and stronger adhesive may help minimize the appearance of subtle wall texture.

CANVAS HAS SPECIAL INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

CANVAS is a textured vinyl peel-and-stick wallcovering. Keep the supplied panel overlap intact. Do not double-cut CANVAS, and do not install it using traditional wallpaper paste.

FABRIC and PREMIUM Peel & Stick

FABRIC and PREMIUM are smooth polyester wallcoverings. They may adhere to some walls with extremely light texture, but the underlying surface may remain visible—particularly beneath pale designs or when light travels across the wall from the side.

These materials may also be professionally installed with compatible clear wallpaper paste when additional adhesion is required. Paste can improve the bond, but it does not eliminate or conceal the wall texture beneath the wallpaper.

When Textured Walls Become a Problem

Peel and stick wallpaper is not recommended for heavily textured walls, pronounced orange-peel texture, knockdown finishes, stucco, popcorn texture, masonry, or surfaces with deep grooves, peaks, and ridges.

On these surfaces, the adhesive may contact only the highest points of the texture. This reduces the available bonding area and can cause:

Lifting panel edges
Curling corners
Bubbles or hollow areas
Visible ridges beneath the wallpaper
Uneven or highly visible seams
Premature adhesive failure

A panel may appear secure immediately after installation and begin lifting later as the adhesive settles, the room temperature changes, or humidity fluctuates.

Why Wall Texture Affects Wallpaper Adhesion

Pressure-sensitive adhesive performs best when it makes broad, even contact with the wall. On a textured surface, only the high points may touch the adhesive while the lower areas remain unsupported.

This loss of contact reduces adhesion and can make the material more vulnerable around panel edges, seams, corners, trim, and areas affected by airflow or humidity.

Why Texture Can Still Show Through Wallpaper

Adhesion and appearance are separate considerations. Even if the wallpaper remains attached, the texture may still be visible through the material.

Texture is often most noticeable:

Under white, ivory, pastel, or other light wallpaper designs
On smooth materials without an embossed surface
When sunlight or artificial light travels across the wall from the side
At overlaps or professionally cut seams
Over walls with irregular rather than uniform texture

Roman E-Z Hang Does Not Correct Wall Texture

Roman E-Z Hang Peel & Stick Helper can provide slip, simplify pattern alignment, and improve surface contact during installation. However, it does not fill texture, level the wall, or convert a heavily textured surface into a suitable wallpaper surface.

If the wall texture prevents adequate adhesive contact, the wall should be properly smoothed and prepared before installation.

How to Test a Textured Wall

Order a sample in the exact material you are considering and install it on the intended wall using the same method planned for the complete project.

Clean and prepare the test area.
Allow the wall to dry completely.
Apply the sample to an area that represents the typical wall texture.
Smooth it firmly without stretching the material.
Inspect the surface under daytime and evening lighting.
Check the sample after 15 minutes, 24 hours, and at least 72 hours.
Examine the edges and corners for lifting or curling.
Look across the wall from the side to determine whether the texture is acceptably visible.
Test removal carefully to evaluate the wall paint when removability is important.

A small sample is helpful, but a larger test section provides a better evaluation of seams, lighting, surface texture, and long-term contact.

Should I Smooth the Wall Before Installing Wallpaper?

If the texture is readily visible or can be felt as pronounced peaks and valleys, smoothing the wall is the most dependable solution.

Depending on the wall condition, preparation may involve skim coating, sanding, repairing damaged areas, applying an appropriate wallcovering primer, or using a professional wall-lining system. Consult a qualified painter or wallpaper installer when extensive wall preparation is required.

Do not attempt to conceal loose paint, damaged drywall, moisture problems, or unstable texture with wallpaper.

Would Traditional Wallpaper Be Better?

CLASSIC Traditional, SELECT Traditional, and GRASSCLOTH Traditional are installed using wallcovering primer and compatible wallpaper paste. A professionally pasted installation can provide greater control and working time than a standard pressure-sensitive installation.

However, traditional wallpaper should not be expected to conceal significant texture. The wall must still be stable, properly prepared, and sufficiently smooth for an acceptable finished appearance.

Wall Preparation Still Matters

The wall must be clean, dry, structurally sound, and properly painted. Remove dust, grease, silicone, household-cleaner residue, and loose material before testing or installing wallpaper.

Wait at least six weeks after painting before installing wallpaper. Some low-VOC, zero-VOC, stain-resistant, washable, and specialty paints may require additional curing time or adhesion testing.
