How to Install Ceiling Wallpaper

Wallpaper on the ceiling can turn an often-overlooked surface into a focal point. American Decals customers have been installing wallpaper on ceilings since 2021; this guide covers planning, surface preparation, panel layout, and the material-specific details to review before installation.

Ceiling installation is more challenging than wall installation because panels must be supported overhead. We recommend working with an experienced wallpaper installer and having a helper available.

Choose the right wallpaper for your ceiling

Traditional unpasted wallpaper

In our experience, traditional unpasted wallpaper is the usual choice for ceiling installations. It is installed with compatible wallpaper adhesive over a properly primed surface. Follow the instructions for the specific material and adhesive, or review our traditional unpasted wallpaper installation guide.

FABRIC Peel & Stick with compatible paste

Some professional installers prefer FABRIC Peel & Stick installed with compatible clear wallpaper paste. Its matte, textile-like face has a soft fabric appearance and a low-reflective finish. Because it is PVC-free and printed with GREENGUARD Gold certified inks, it may also suit customers looking for a fabric-based option with those product attributes. The certification applies to the inks; material properties vary by product.

The matte surface may make minor surface variation less noticeable than a shinier finish, but it does not conceal significant cracks, ridges, loose paint, uneven repairs, or pronounced ceiling texture. Proper preparation is still essential. Material and labor costs vary, so compare the total cost for your project before choosing.

Use only a compatible clear wallpaper paste and follow the adhesive and material instructions for the chosen installation method. Test the wallpaper, paste, primer, and ceiling surface together before starting. Adding paste changes the material’s removability. Do not use traditional wallpaper paste with CANVAS Peel & Stick. American Decals’ Wallpaper Materials Guide explains the material differences.

Before you begin

  • Inspect the ceiling. It should be clean, dry, smooth, and structurally sound. Repair cracks, holes, loose paint, and uneven areas. Do not apply wallpaper directly over pronounced texture; have the surface properly assessed and smoothed first.
  • Resolve moisture problems. Do not wallpaper a ceiling with an active leak, dampness, or unresolved staining.
  • Prime appropriately. Use a wallcovering primer compatible with the ceiling surface, wallpaper, and adhesive. Allow it to dry and cure as directed by its manufacturer.
  • Allow new paint to cure. American Decals’ wallpaper installation guidance recommends waiting at least six weeks after painting; some specialty paints may need longer. Check the paint and wallpaper instructions before proceeding.
  • Protect the room. Move or cover furniture and floors. Turn off power at the breaker before working near ceiling fixtures. Have an electrician handle fixture removal or wiring if needed, and keep water and adhesive away from exposed wiring.
  • Get help and prepare safe access. Use a helper to support and position the panels. Arrange ladders or work platforms so you can work steadily without overreaching.

Measure and plan the panel layout

  1. Measure the ceiling length and width in several places. Ceilings may not be perfectly square, so use the largest measurements when planning coverage.
  2. Account for the design direction, pattern repeat, ceiling fixtures, and the supplied trim allowance. Decide where the first and last panels will land before applying adhesive.
  3. American Decals wallpaper panels are 26 inches wide and include approximately 0.4 inches of overlap. Plan the panel count and layout using the product details for your order; do not treat the full panel width as the finished coverage width.
  4. Unroll and inspect all panels. Confirm the design, material, panel numbers, and order before installation. Arrange them in sequence and check that the design flows correctly from one panel to the next.
  5. Mark a straight reference line for the first panel. If the design has a strong central feature, plan the layout around the ceiling’s center so the finished design looks balanced.

General ceiling installation steps

  1. Follow the instructions for the selected material. For traditional unpasted wallpaper, use compatible adhesive and primer. For FABRIC Peel & Stick installed with paste, follow the compatible clear-paste method and directions. Do not assume that the same application steps apply to every material.
  2. Work in manageable sections. Apply adhesive only to the area you can cover while it remains workable, following the adhesive manufacturer’s directions.
  3. Position the first panel on your reference line. Have your helper support the panel while you align and smooth it. Leave the specified excess at the edges for trimming.
  4. Install the remaining panels in order. Match the design at each seam and use the supplied overlap. Smooth from the center outward without stretching the wallpaper. Follow the material’s seam instructions; experienced installers may double-cut materials where the instructions allow. CANVAS Peel & Stick must retain its overlap and must not be double-cut.
  5. Trim carefully. Use a sharp blade and straightedge, changing blades as needed. Work cautiously around ceiling edges and fixture openings. Do not cut near live wiring.
  6. Clean and allow the installation to dry naturally. Remove adhesive residue promptly using the method recommended for the wallpaper and paste. Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s drying directions and avoid forcing the ceiling to dry with direct heat.
